Jane Eyre is an adaptation of the classic novel written by Charlotte Bronte.

It stars young Australian treasure Wasikowska as the titular character that the tale revolves around.

The Alice in Wonderland star plays Jane Eyre, a young woman who hasn’t had the most fortunate of lives, despite her wealthy family.

Orphaned and left in the care of her wicked aunt-in-law and hideous cousin after her uncle passes, Jane is friendless and regarded as the type of soggy waste product you wouldn’t wish to stand in.

Shipped off to a boarding school, it’s definitely not Hogwarts, as Jane finds herself lacking friends and regularly on the receiving end of a cane, until she makes one common ally among the crowd.

The film flies from forward to back, as we see Jane’s story unfold and lead up to how she got to into her present situation, which was being found near enough dead on a doorstep.

After leaving school, Jane finds work as a governess with a student body of one, the charming French Adele, while she also has kindhearted colleague Mrs Fairfax (Dench) the housekeeper for company.

After a case of mistaken identity, Jane is introduced to her employer, the mysterious Mr. Rochester (Fassbender) who surveys Jane with great intrigue.

Despite the obvious sexual tension and lust building between the pair for the duration, naïve Jane doesn’t see fit to question the suspicious activities happening around her home or the secret Rochester obviously houses.

Wasikowska pulls off the prim and fair role easily, not a million miles away from her outing as Disney’s heroine Alice, unless you count the lack of magic, talking creatures and overall normality of her character.

Fassbender’s Rochester is brilliant, handsome, charming, dark and brooding. He’s a versatile actor that can go from Spartan warrior, power-mad mutant magnet, a woman’s punchbag in Haywire and now a classic character from a beloved novel.
