Starring – Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis.
Jason Statham probably isn’t ever going to win an Academy Award for starring in a mind-bending period drama, but he’s undeniably great at what he does, which is growling at people before proceeding to beat them to a pulp.
Naturally, Parker begins with Stath’s titular character wielding a gun around during a robbery, although the heist swiftly goes awry, which leaves our bald, bearded bloke worse for wear and seeking revenge. This, of course, is a quintessential example of Statham film, and it starts off well with action and thrills in equal portions.
Then Jennifer Lopez happens.
The singer plays struggling estate agent, Leslie Rodgers, who Parker reluctantly enlists to assist with his retribution. And from the minute she’s introduced, the film takes a sharp nosedive that doesn’t level off.
You’d be well within your rights to think the first Lopez scene was ported over from a different film, with her character oozing romcom, thus poisoning the generic tough guy plot and twisting it into a warped tale of unrequited love.
