The official trailer for The Sweeney – as in Todd, Flying Squad to those of you that aren’t clued up with cockney vernacular – has finally escaped production jail, following the film’s original mention back in 2008 when Nick Love – who directs – favourite Danny Dyer was rumoured to be attached.

However, while Dyer isn’t involved, fellow East Londoners Ray Winstone and Ben ‘Plan B’ Drew are on board as detectives Jack Regan and George Carter, respectively.

When the pair first met, Winstone infamously – and unsubtly – questioned Drew whether he would be able to keep up in the role as the fit as a fiddle Carter due to his overweight build, which led Drew to hit the gym and start a high protein diet in order to prove his co-star wrong.

The film is based on the seventies TV show about the two hardnosed cops and their antics in the UK capital.

The exact plot of the film hasn’t been revealed as it isn’t released until 12th September, but apparently, ‘sometimes you have to act like a criminal to catch a criminal.’

Winstone, of course, is a seasoned pro at playing the tough guy on screen, while Drew shone in Harry Brown as a thorn in the side of the Metropolitan Police, so it will be interesting to see how he comes across on the right side of the law.

The trailer looks impressive and Love is a dab hand at capturing London at its grittiest, so that combined with his direction of the two would-be law enforcers could spell a winner.

Check out the trailer below.
