With over eight months to go until the release of The Dark Knight Rises, more stills have arrived of The Bat (Christian Bale) and Bane (Tom Hardy) going toe-to-toe amongst a crowd of what looks like rioting Gotham City folk.

When Bane was announced as the main villain, many raised eyebrows. The reason being is Bane has never been a major villain on-screen without some assistance, take for instance Batman and Robin with George Clooney as the Caped Crusader, Bane was nothing more than a henchman when compared to frontrunners like The Joker and The Penguin.

For Bane to take on The Bat as what is thought to be the main villain, the common expectation is for the film to be based around the Knightfall comic book arc in which Bane creates a mass breakout from Arkham Asylum in turn wearing Batman down with exhaustion and burnout.

Judging from the images below, a breakout is exactly what may have happened as Gotham PD seem to be taking a beating.

Bane then takes the time to strike having learned Batman’s identity and breaks our hero’s back, which is then healed through magical means.

I say main villain because previous films have seen The Dark Knight up against more than one foe with the likes of Falcone, Ra’s al Ghul, The Scarecrow, The Joker, Two-Face and other yobs spread across two films alone.

If Knightfall does take place, the methodology that Nolan approaches it with will be interesting in order to see Batman’s ‘Rise’ from a broken back. And also just how will he depict Bane’s serum enhancement in order to keep the tone realistic?
